Color Spotlight: Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron
Hi Remodelaholics, it’s Cyndy from The Creativity Exchange back with my monthly paint color post. Last month, I talked about 2016 trends in paint colors and if you happened to miss that post, you can find it here.
Today, I wanted to do another Color Spotlight and highlight one of the most popular and versatile interior door and cabinet colors out there. Wrought Iron from Benjamin Moore is a workhorse of a color because there is nothing that this color can’t do. While it’s really popular right now for interior doors and cabinets, it’s also a near perfect exterior trim/accent color and it even works well on a wall too.

Paint Color Spotlight: Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron
Before I show you what all this color can do, I’m sharing an image below that compares Wrought Iron to a traditional Benjamin Moore black. You can really see why Wrought Iron is such an amazing color because it’s a slightly muted version of black:
Blacks can be harsh but as you can see above, Wrought Iron is a black/brown/gray color that is less harsh than black and the brown in the base adds a little warmth. In fact, Wrought Iron can look like a very dark brown in spaces with a lot of natural light. The gray in the base helps to diffuse and balance the black and the warmth.

Where did you purchase your front doors from?
Great website! I have a question. Has anybody painted the casing around the inside of a front door that is black iron? Well, painted it an iron color? The white casing (which is the color of baseboard and other casing in house) seems to detract from the beauty of the iron front door (again from the inside).
An alternative is to put sheetrock up to the edge of the front door (therefore, no casing) but that seems to be a problem to do given that the walls are slightly uneven around the front door (so remedying that may make everything look awful).

I have a open floor home with black furniture but red accents like one accent wall red with white accessories.But would like to paint the living something else besides white.And also doors.
I think wrought iron would be a beautiful color for our front door and shutters. However, I having trouble picking exterior color for our craftsman style home. WHat colors do you think would compliment wrought iron?
We are contemplating painting our basement ceiling in wrought iron for a lighter black industrial look. Any suggestions for neutral wall colors? Thinking SW Repose Gray for main wall (we have Mindful Gray upstairs and love against our white ceiling/dark wood floors but fear it might have too much brown tones for black ceiling and also want a change downstairs) and SW Jubilee or Krypton for an accent wall. Any alternative suggestions? Thanks.
I love your French doors in Wrought Iron and am seriously considering painting mine. I’m nervous the color will look more gray than black. Your pics show a definite black, but the Ben Moore website indicates the paint can look very dark brown in certain lighting or gray. Your thoughts?
The best way to try it out is to grab a sample and see how it looks in your lighting — natural vs. artificial and the temperature of artificial lighting can all make a difference. You can paint a sample board (like a poster board) or many paint stores now sell large stick-on paint sample swatches, too.
Hello,
I love the first picture of the door with the Wrought Iron paint color. Can you please tell me what sheen is on the door? I am painting a buffet in this color and they used a Satin finish. It appears kinda shiny. Do you recommend a Satin sheen for a buffet cabinet if I am using Wrought Iron?
Hi Kristan, Doors are typically painted in a semi-gloss or satin finish — the picture you referenced is from a home show so I’m not certain the exact sheen. Both of those sheens will be a little shiny but are also more durable than a matte or flat finish, so you have to find the balance between the look and the durability (washability) that’s right for you.
I actually painted the whole exterior of my old house this color and it was such an amazing color to go with the landscaping. It changes color depending on the weather, too. People would stop and comment on the color all the time.
