Houndstooth Pattern Painted Dresser

Sometimes I find a piece of furniture and wait for inspiration to come to me for its makeover.  Other times I have an idea and then scour my sources for the perfect or near perfect piece of furniture to put the idea to work.  In the case of the latest transformation I had a vision of a 2 drawer side table or nightstand.  I knew I wanted to paint a large houndstooth pattern across the drawers.  It took me a while to find the right set of drawers and when I did finally find it, there were 4 drawers which created a lot more detail work for me but I think it was worth it!  Here’s how it turned out…

I was so excited to find it that I started working on it right away without ever taking a proper before shot.  So here are the drawers with their wooden knobs already removed.

They got a coat of ASCP Paris Grey.

Some delightful cracking occurred in the finish which I totally embraced.

The exterior, on the other hand, was a different story. It needed some structural repair and serious sanding on the top. My contractor, Ryan, took care of that while I worked on the details of the drawers.

I worked on the pink houndstooth over the course of days.  Actually weeks.  Starting with sketching the pattern on the drawer fronts.

I tackled them one row at a time until all 96 houndstooth images were painted. But who’s counting?  The pink consists of several custom mixes of ASCP Emperor’s Silk and Pure White.  The mix was never quite the same which made for variations in the houndstooth pattern almost creating a diagonal ombre effect.  The creation is sealed and buffed with clear wax.

There was one obvious choice for knobs.  Clear glass ones found on ebay.  They really glam it up!  The night stand is perfect for a little girl’s room or a swanky grownup room.
