How to Make a Wood Slice Wreath for Christmas

Ingredients

  • Wood Slices for Crafts - 16Pcs 3.5''-4'' Diameter Unfinished Wood Rounds with Bark
  • 14-inch Wire Wreath Form or 12-inch Cardboard Wreath Form Dollar Tree, Amazon or craft stores
  • Pine Pieces or Picks real branches from your tree, or artificial from Dollar Tree or craft store
  • Large Red Berries Dollar Tree
  • Red Plaid Ribbon or a premade bow craft store or Dollar Tree
  • Lambs Ear Floral Pieces or other faux greenery, such as holly or mistletoe
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Zip Ties or Floral Wire optional

Instructions

  • Start by laying out all the wood pieces to see how they will fit on the wreath form. Make adjustments if needed to ensure a snug fit. For a well-filled wood slice wreath, use two layers of wood slices. Place the first layer of wood slices on the bottom with spaces between, then add a second layer of slices on top to cover the gaps, so the outer edges are all basically aligned. You can leave one wooden slice without overlapping (and save those pieces for another craft) since this area will be covered by the bow and greenery.
  • Apply hot glue to the wire wreath form or flat wooden wreath form and firmly press a wood slice on top. Repeat this process until the entire wreath form is covered in the bottom layer of wood slices. Glue the top layer of wood slices on top of the first layer, and ensure that the wood slices are overlapping slightly for a cohesive look. If the hot glue doesn't seem to hold strong enough, attach a zip tie or floral wire to the wood slice to attach to the wreath form.
  • Lay out the greenery and place the bow on top to visualize the design. You can add more greenery to enhance the wreath's dimensions and color palette. Having multiple textures of leaves and branches really makes the wreath look wonderful!
  • Apply hot glue along the stem of the greenery and press the pieces firmly onto the wood slices.
  • If you aren't using a premade bow, tie or make a ribbon bow. (See how to make your own simple bow here.)
  • Use a twist tie or zip tie to secure the bow to the wreath form and adjust it to your desired position. You could also use hot glue.

Notes

Variations for Your Winter Wood Slice Wreath

Painted Wood Slices: Add a pop of color to your wreath by painting the wood slices in various festive shades. This customization allows you to match your wreath to your existing décor. Use craft acrylic paints, paint pens, or leftover wall paint.
Wood Burned Letters or Symbols: Spell a creative message (joy, merry, welcome, ho ho ho are some ideas) or add snowflakes, hearts, or patterns to your wood slices using a wood burning tool. Be warned: wood-burning is little bit addictive!
Personalized Embellishments: Get creative with the decorations. Add personalized ornaments, miniature Christmas figurines, or even family photos for a sentimental touch.
Seasonal Greenery: Swap out the greenery to match different seasons. For a Christmas-themed wreath, opt for holly and mistletoe. In January, switch to pinecones and winter foliage. For spring, add tulips or poppies (like this woven rope wreath), and for summer, feature everyone's favorite: sunflowers!
Themed Ribbons: Experiment with different ribbons to change the mood of your wreath. A burlap ribbon gives it a rustic look, while a satin ribbon adds a touch of elegance.
Different Sizes of Wood Slices: We used all wood slices of 3-4" in diameter, but you could create a totally different look by adding in smaller pieces, or using one large slice of wood like we used for this trivet. Or use all mini slices to make a wood slice wreath ornament for the Christmas tree!
