Kitchens with Color
In honor of National Painting Week, I thought it would be fun to look at some boldly painted kitchen cabinets.
It seems that only ten years ago, cabinetry options were limited to a wide variety of wood tones and maybe some white. Color in the kitchen wasn’t for cabinetry, it was for linens or serving ware or walls. Today,we’re embracing color everywhere…even on our kitchen cabinetry. It started slow, with a few of us trying edgier neutrals, like black or gray, on our cupboards or maybe an accent island. Then a brave soul or two showed us how pretty blue cabinetry could be. Now, more and more designers and homeowners are stepping out of their comfort zones and trying every color of the rainbow. Love it or hate it, you have to admit there’s something energizing about a kitchen that’s saturated with color.

So, I’m really curious: how many of you would be willing to try painting your kitchen cabinets with a bold color? Would you try it out on a single cabinet or island first? If you could try out a new color on your cabinets for a single day, what color would it be?

oh my goodness what a surprise to see my blue kitchen among all those beauties! thanks!
Yes! I have always loved your bold color choice! GOOD JOB!
I’m ready to paint all my kitchen cabinets in Pencil Point by Behr (very similar to charcoal gray)! Right now they are natural oak that is yellowing from the finish the builders put on them. The breakfast table will be painted Gothic Amethyst or Amethyst Plox, I haven’t decided which just yet.
Beth, that is exciting to here about your kitchen project. I hope that it turns out great.
Not everyone can build up the courage to paint their kitchen cabinets purple or lime green – but these were some great examples of what is possible if you have the guts! I think you can still get the same bold feel with more conservative colors without sacrificing your resale value later down the road. White, gray or even mocha colored paint can make a big impact in an average sized kitchen.
I would like to paint my kitchen with the sky blue u showed. But what material are these cupboards made of?
You would have to check over to the original sources for more info (linked under each post) but you can paint pretty much any cupboards. We have lots of tutorials — just search for painted cabinets here on our site and you’ll find lots of colors and methods! Thanks!
My cabinets are simple 1968 style which are stained a dark maple. The cabinets are maple, and former owners painted the inside of them. I would like to paint them all white, do I have to strip them first to get a good finish on them? My walls are sage green, and appliances are white, except for our new frig which is stainless. Plan to change out the rest of the appliances as finances permit.
Hi Christine,
Where the inside is already painted, it would probably be safer to strip them, especially if the paint is in bad shape at all. These tips should help you to get a good finish, though! https://www.remodelaholic.com/2015/03/how-to-paint-cabinet-doors/
We in the process of building our last home. I was surprise that my husband said how about a yellow kittchen. Our plan is to have yellow cabinets (loved the color after reviewing them on the web). Any suggestion to wall color (the area is an open concept).
Hi Carolyn,
How exciting, and what a fun kitchen color! Could you send me a photo of your kitchen or a similar kitchen for reference? I’d love to post on our Facebook page to get some more paint color suggestions for you as well. hello@remodelaholic.com
