Waterproof Wood-look Flooring

Written by Cassity

My sister recently called me and asked my advice for some new flooring.  She currently had a faux travertine tile, that while it was nice it hadn’t been laid well just 10 years ago but now it was cracking and she was hoping to replace it.  She couldn’t have called at a better time, because I had just learned about some amazing new products from Shaw Floors one of my favorite brand partners.  Just to give you a sneak peek…

NEW Wood-look Waterproof Flooring -- This beautiful flooring is durable AND easy to clean, great for kitchens and more. Get the look of hardwood, at an affordable price, without the extra maintenance.

Shaw has a new product called Floorté that is perfect for laying over existing tile (if your doors allow for the extra height…my sister’s project didn’t have the room sadly!)  But even better it looks just like hardwood with great texture and a pretty sheen that isn’t overly shiny WITHOUT the annoying parts of hardwood floors… And I should know –  I have hardwood floors AND kids… (NOT a match made in heaven at the moment- MY opinion, not necessarily everyones elses- but holy cow, why do they always spill SO much water… and don’t get me started with all the crushed ice they fling all over the place- well technically their friends-my kids are banded from crushed ice)! – In fact we just purchased a new (older) home and we will not be going with wood again, we will be going with this same beautiful Floorté product!)

The other fun news is that I happened to have the ability to gift her some new floors.  Which is fun and exciting, and made the perfect excuse for me to visit – even better!!

I asked my sister Noelle to jot down some of her thoughts.

“Looking for flooring was a little overwhelming. We knew we wanted our floor to look like wood, but we didn’t know what product to use.  In Arizona, we can’t have REAL WOOD.  We picked out a wood-look laminate flooring we liked, but we were a little worried about using it in our kitchen and bathrooms.  You always hope that you won’t have water damage, but really it is just a matter of time before your fridge, toilet, or sink leaks….”

When it comes to the looks of the flooring, she said “It was important to me that the flooring had a great TEXTURE. I didn’t want anything smooth and SHINY–uggg.  When we put in our original flooring (which was a dirt colored large tile), I thought it would be the perfect camoflauge for dirt.  Well, it was pretty good at hiding dirt, BUTTTTTTT, it had just enough SHEEN to ruin the dirt hiding.  I could see foot prints when the light hit it.  I just hated that.”  Not to mention the cracks….

“Enter FLOORTE.  I heard about Floorté made by Shaw from my sister.”

Floorté Benefits

  •   Waterproof
  •   Great real wood look
  •   Nice wood-like texture

Floorté is the perfect mix of between beauty and cleanability, it offers fashion and function AND is totally affordable. It looks like authentic hardwood (and tile), it is strong, durable, flexible and waterproof.   Available in a wide range of styles and color options – Classico, Premio, Valore and, most recently, Alto HD and Alto Mix – Floorté offers unmatched performance for any lifestyle and any budget. You no longer have to compromise your desired aesthetic due to time or budget constraints.  Easy-to-install, strong and durable, Shaw’s enhanced vinyl plank offers versatility and leading performance characteristics, including Floorté’s innovative waterproof feature. Floorté is spill-proof, splatter-proof, accident-proof and is easily wet mopped for simple, efficient cleanup. It’s a flooring option that looks like hardwood with easier maintenance.

When choosing color, the Floorté Bella in San Marco, Noelle said, “I chose a color that had lights and darks.  I did a dirt test. haha! I swept my old floor and picked up a little dirt.  I sprinkled the dirt on my samples of Floorte and chose the one that hid it best. I am going to honest, my old light brown ugly tile hit the dirt better, but I had to mop a lot more. My new Floorte floor will have to be swept a little more, but I can’t see any annoying foot prints!!  Waterspots are bright when they are wet, but they dry fine and are not noticeable.”

“I am in Arizona so I found a local dealer (find yours at the link) Western States Flooring.  Western States had some amazingly professional teams there to help us install it. One thing I do NOT like is the transition pieces (from the floor to the carpet area). We have a huge are that would have required lots of transition pieces..yuck! But the installer chosen by Western States Flooring, Tim Carnevale, did an AMAZING job. He didn’t use the transition pieces so it looks incredible!!! I am thrilled with the finished look.  I was also worried that the molding they use to hold down the floor would look tacky.  WHAT!!?? Oh my goodness, it actually adds dimension to my current molding (more chunky looking). They installed it and we had it painted the same color as the molding instead of the floor. Instead of just dealing with it, I actually like it!”

“One other unexpected bonus is that it is much quieter than my tile when we are downstairs in the basement. Before, my daughter could hear us walking around in the mornings. She could hear every footstep, but when we switched to the vinyl Floorte, she can hardly hear anything!!”

“Anyway, I am IN LOVE with my floor.  It FEELS and LOOKS awesome!!!”

Why can’t you have wood in Arizona? (Just curious – I live in Arizona and we have wood.)

There are certain issues that can happen if it’s too dry where would Can split and crack, also because there’s a lot more sandy soil, dirt in the area that can wear on the wood finish a lot faster – but it might just come down to her personal opinion!!

So timely. We live in AZ and will be remodeling soon. We have hard tile in our kitchen and want to replace it but I’ve been dragging my feet because of the MESS I know we’ll have in taking up the old tile. We’ll have to check this out. Wonder how it holds up to dogs’ nails though. Thanks!

That flooring looks amazing! I love that she did a real dirt test 🙂
Now another item I notice- how does she have all her counters so cleaned off? (or was that something just for the pictures, as we all would do?0

That’s definitely a picture thing!! but also she has a really cool cabinet where all of the appliances are sitting on pull out shelves like toasters so that that’s actually not sitting on her counter’s AND a really deep think for hiding dishes !!

Ooooh! We are looking at new flooring too and am so glad you posted about this product. Here in Austin installing wood floors can be hit or miss. What would you say the advantage is that this product has over the new fake wood tile that is becoming so popular?

Personally not having to clean the grout would be the biggest benefit for me!! because we actually have some wood tile in our house and we like it that keeping the grout clean is a pain and the sealing that actually needs to be reapplied it’s just too much maintenance for me even though they kind of tout tile floors as no maintenance but there is some!!

OMG! I have been pondering changing the floor in the living room, hallway, and kitchen. Got estimates and tearing out the old ceramic floor for wood was soooo much money. Most of the expense came from tearing up the ceramic flooring in all the estimates I received.

I will absolutely look into this product.

It would look so much better in my home. Thank you for sharing this information. I am so excited!

Please send us pictures if it works out! I hope that you have the space to just leave it right over your tile because that would be a dream !!

Before choosing a flooring for the room, there are so many attributes to weigh in. No doubt, it is important to focus on the aesthetic. But it is more important to consider the functionality. The excitement of new floor fades away. But it’s functionality won’t. And when it comes to holding up to life’s wear and tear, waterproof flooring is a must. It puts up a tough fight against splashy sinks. It provides protection from the mold. Laminate flooring, vinyl flooring, wood-plastic composite flooring- are different kinds of waterproof flooring available in the market.
