“I used 2x4s for the frame. I attached two 52″ boards to two 15″ boards with pocket holes to make a rectangle. Then I added two 12 1/2″ braces toward the center for support. Then I attached a 3/4″ piece of plywood (18×57) to the frame by drilling pocket holes in the 2×4 frame and attaching the bench to them from underneath. Then I added two 18″ pieces of trim on the sides of the bench and a 57 1/4” piece of trim on the front. Then I stained the bench and coated it with polyurethane. I painted the frame and posts with white semi-gloss paint.
I attached four 3/4″ plywood panels (10×51) to the top of the hutch which is also a 3/4″ piece of plywood (10×56) using pocket holes. I then attached the six 1x4s (18″ each) to the back bottom of the hutch and also 5″ down from the top of the hutch. Then I attached the hutch to the bench using pocket holes that I drilled at the bottom of the panels. Then I attached two 10″ pieces of trim to the top sides of the hutch and a 56 1/2″ piece of trim on the top front of the hutch. I also added trim to the front panels which are 50 1/4″ long.
I used wood filler to fill the nail holes, all the pocket holes and the top of the wood screws where I attached the frame to the posts. Then I sanded down the filler before I painted it.
Then I painted the top part with white semi-gloss paint and added hooks to the upper 1×4 boards.”
What a beautiful finish! We love the look and the functionality! It will no doubt be a very used and very loved area in the house! Definitely an inspirational project showing the fun we can have with DIY and what we can imagine, we can create! Thank you so much for sharing it with us!
