DIY Trumeau Floor Mirror Tutorial by Mimi

The project I am sharing today is a DIY Trumeau mirror.
To build the “frame” I started by cutting a piece of plywood to the size I wanted. I used a skill saw to make the cuts but you could always have it cut to size at a Lumber yard before you bring it home. For the top and bottom I used some molding I had lying around from previous projects.
To hold the mirror in place I purchased molding that has a notch in it. I laid the mirror on the plywood and started playing around with different trim. Two hours later I was still playing with it. I finally had to tell myself just start cutting women or you will never get done! It went pretty quick after that. I used glue and my handy dandy nail gun to attach the trim being extra careful with the trim around the mirror.
The carved piece along the top is something I got a million years ago but never quite figured out what to do with. The design is grapevine and birds. Don’t have one of those lying around? That’s okay Home Improvement stores sell all kinds of fancy moldings and scroll details. The possibilities are endless!
For the bottom I used a 1X6 nailed on top of the plywood and 2 different kinds of trim.
For the finish the color I used was Blue Ocean Breeze spray paint by Krylon. After letting it dry for only about a half an hour (impatient much?) I dry brushed with off white paint and used dark brown glaze to finish. This color is BRIGHT, the glazing really tones it down. I used the same color on an end table that is across the room (shown here) and similar blues are in artwork and pillows in the room.
I love the color against the dark wall.
