tips to prevent septic tank clogging

Septic tank systems need to maintain an internal balance of bacteria and will fail if they are not handled properly. The good news though is that there’s no mystery behind what you can and can’t do with a septic tank. Here are five tips you should utilize to make sure your septic tank doesn’t clog and continues to function properly for years to come.

Make Sure That You Don’t Put Chemicals down The Drain

Disposing of chemicals like gasoline, paint thinner, or varnish down the drain can easily destroy your septic tank’s bacterial equilibrium. If it’s disrupted, the solids inside the septic tank won’t be broken down. This will lead to your septic tank clogging and ultimately failing.

Don’t Flush Garbage

Solids are filtered out during wastewater treatment in sewage plants. That means that while it’s not a good idea to flush trash or solid matter in a house that’s connected to a city sewage line, it won’t damage anything. Septic tank systems don’t have that ability. Never flush latex gloves, cigarette butts, coffee grounds, or disposable diapers.

Make Sure You Protect the Drain Field

Your septic tank’s drain field plays a vital role in the system working since the wastewater needs to be sent someplace. Tree roots can cause the drain field to break apart and cause the water to not be properly absorbed. Never drive over the drain field. Make sure that nothing is on the drain field besides grass.

Never Ever Skip Maintenance or Septic Tank Pumping

For some people this will seem obvious, but there are some things you can put off maintenance for. Your car’s engine will not suddenly fail if you don’t have the oil changed by the recommended date. However, if you put off having your septic tank pumped there’s a very high chance your tank will end up clogged. Kamloops Septic Service has said on their site, that there are environmentally friendly chemicals and treatments that you can add to your tank that will cause a smelly mess back up in the future.

Avoid Using Large Amount of Water

A large sudden inflow of water can cause the drain field to become saturated. Since that will slow down wastewater absorption, it can ultimately result in a clog occurring. Appliances like hot tubs can cause this problem to occur. Additionally, doing things like timing showers throughout the day and staggering loads of laundry will prevent it as well.

Following these tips will go a long way towards making sure that your septic system never experiences a clog or backup. Never take risks with your septic system if you’re unsure of whether it can dispose of something or not. One mistake can easily cost you a great deal of money having the damage undone.

  2. Recent widow at 49, unexpected cardiac arrest of spouse only 54!! He took care of these things, for most part. For some reason, seems like each winter, septic gets blocked. Newer home, about 12 yrs old. Only have myself, son, part time dgt who is in college and friends visit. Had back up last yr after Jeff passed. Got cleaned then had it sucked out! But again this yr, back up, notice with gurgle of downstairs toilet( have 3). Then backs up, can’t be plunged, and will backup into cellar if washer, shower or anything run. Tried snake brush, nope too far!! So have to dig up septic to find outlet. Usually clogged with TP!! Have told son to use less, have used septic safe TP! Have energy efficient toilet and appliances that use less water, to be economic!! So toilet even full water not real powerful! I heard live yeast monthly helps better than expensive chemicals, which have tried, but too late to clean clog!! Any good remedies for monthly treatments to help?? Please let me know!! Do not want to dig up septic again!!????????????????????????????
