Modern Xmas – Fun & Eclectic Holiday Decor
Hello and happy December! It’s hard to believe the end of the year is upon us already, isn’t it? I’m Dawn, from DesigningDawn.com, back again with another monthly mood-board for your decoration inspiration. If you’ve missed any of my previous inspiration posts here on Remodelaholic, you can always check those out here.
This month, I’ve been thinking a lot about Holiday decor, as have most people. I love traditional Christmas decor, full of burgundy and forest greens, creams and gold. But you see so much of that this time of year, that for my mood board this month, I really wanted to branch out to some more unexpected and modern Christmas decor inspiration. I started by rounding up some inspiration images below. I think there is a lovely holiday feel to them all, even though none have a ‘traditional’ seasonal style.
You see what I mean? Isn’t it fun how festive they feel, despite having a modern spin on a classic Christmas? I wanted to create that same feeling with my mood board this month, and I came up with the collection below: A Modern Christmas, with fun, eclectic decor.

Tips for Modern Eclectic Holiday Decorating
The easiest way to get an updated Christmas look is to start with an updated color pallet. In the mood board above, I did use red and green, but not the deep burgundy and forest green of a traditional holiday color scheme. Instead, I swapped them out for shades of spring green and persimmon to echo the Christmas feeling, but in a brighter tone. Then I threw in aqua and gold to round it out. The aqua works well, bringing in the feeling of ice and snow, and gold (or anything sparkly) is always a safe bet around the holidays!
To keep it modern, I also steered clear of traditional Christmas patterns, like fair isle, and opted instead for bolder geometric graphics like broad stripes and number motifs, which are fun all year round, but tend to bring to mind Advent Calendars as Christmas approaches.
The clean lines of the furniture in the room help keep it feeling updated, and I decided to echo that in the rest of the decor too. Like a simple graphic garland and those amazing brass wall hooks. How great would your stockings look hanging from those babies?
