One of the biggest sticker shocks of moving into a new home can be the price of dressing your windows. Heading out to the home decor (or even discount) store for drapery rods and curtain panels can easily set you back $50 a window or more — ouch! But luckily for you and budget-conscious folks everywhere, window treatments and hardware are one of the easier things to DIY in your home — and many don’t even require any tools! Dress your windows up with trim, and then add one of these window treatmentss or these DIY window coverings with one of the DIY curtain rod options below for a custom chic style all your own. (And don’t forget to read these tricks to hanging great-looking curtains!)
DIY Curtain Hanging Options
For a non-traditional look, try using knobs, nails, or hooks hung above the window to loop curtains over. (This works best for curtains which are decorative and not functional, such as when you have a shade beneath to control the light and just need curtains for decor.)
I have 2 windows next to each other that I wanted to drape as one, but it is really wide. The rods were so expensive, so I used electrical conduit for pennies…oh, ok. a couple of bucks. I painted them black and bought finials. They were a tiny bit big so used black electrical tape to make it fit. Perfect for less!
