Get This Look: Mixed Patterns in the Master Bedroom

Seven Tips for Mixing Patterns
1. Get a Little Bit Fancy
A fun and fancy light fixture just makes any room more inviting. The neutral white/clear chandelier featured in this room adds pizazz without interfering with the color scheme or overpowering the fun patterns. Try this white wrought iron and crystal chandelier or this smaller accent chandelier (both from Amazon) in your room.
2. Dress up the Window
Curtains can cost a pretty penny and some of the available patterns can be a bit… bland. To liven up the draperies, shop in the table linens section instead — fabric tablecloths are less expensive than pre-made drapes and come in a larger variety of fun colors and patterns. Then turn them into simple draperies in just a few (no-sew!) steps like BargainHoot shows.
3. Not Bored Headboard
Use a large pattern on a fun-shaped headboard as the focal point of the room. Headboards are a fairly easy DIY, so save some change and try one of our headboard ideas, such as this geometric upholstered headboard or this curvy diamond tufted headboard.
4. Lovely Lighting
Update an older bedside lamp with some spray paint and a new lampshade to match the colors and patterns of the room. Learn how to recover a lampshade or get extra adventurous and hand-paint it!
5. Patterns, Patterns Everywhere
Pattern mixing adds vitality to the room, but too many patterns can be an eyesore instead of eye-candy. Keep it under control by choosing a variety of patterns in 2-3 main colors throughout the room. Have one pattern that pulls all of the colors in the room together. Vary the scale and size of the pattern to keep the patterns from competing instead of complementing.
This room uses a large scale geometric pattern on the headboard, a smaller floral pattern on the curtain, a simple floral pattern on the lampshade and chair throw pillow, and then varying stripe patterns on the bed pillows, chair cushion, and rug. Other types of patterns you could use include polka dot, paisley, checks, or plaids. Add a few larger solid pieces, like the bed sheets, comforter, and throw quilt to keep the patterns from taking over.
6. Mixing Styles
In a fun eclectic room like this, matching furniture would look out of place. Use furniture in neutral shades but a variety of styles, like this traditional pedestal table and casual rattan chair, to complete the look and make the room cozy and useful.
7. Subtle Solids
Be sure to include a few single-color pieces to balance out the large/loud patterns you choose. But solid doesn’t have to be boring — use a solid quilted throw like this one on Amazon (in white, yellow, or blue) to add texture without competing with the patterns.
