Quick Install of Concrete Countertops! Kitchen Remodel!
I had to share what Cassie had to say about the kitchen in her email:
Hi there!
I really wanted to send you my kitchen remodel for a couple reasons:
1) We are renting and didn’t want to spend a ton of money, which I think can account for a lot of people out there and…
2) We have done several remodels before but did some things different this time and wanted to share our new, fast and super cheap idea with the world.
We have done a handful of concrete countertops in the past, and wanted the same look without the two weeks of process and the steep price tag. (People think concrete is cheaper, but it is actually the same as granite because of the labor in the long run) So, my husband decided to go right over the existing countertop with Level Quick concrete. I’ll tell you what, it turned out amazing, and I had instant countertops that didn’t have to cure for two weeks.

Pink cabinets, pink tiled countertops. This picture is blurry, but you get it.

So we painted the cabinets with glossy white and added some stainless hardware.
Then we did the countertops:

My husband made forms around the existing countertops.

We sanded the tile so the concrete would have something to grab on to.

Then he poured Level Quick concrete over the top of them

The concrete leveled itself out.

Removed the forms, and my husband smoothed it out.

Now, we have done several concrete countertops before, and have removed the old countertop and poured a whole new one. This was an experiment to pour concrete over the top of existing countertops. And I must say, it has worked out so far! There are a couple cracks, but ALL concrete cracks. Gives it character. Just wait for it to be done curing, then we put a coat of concrete sealer over the top and here’s what they look like now:

Super gorgeous. And it was cheap, and fast-about $200 for a new countertop!! Then we had the ugly backsplash, remember?

So here it is all put together…

I am thinking a rug in here too….any suggestions?

New appliances- Craigslist $2500

New faucet- Ebay $100

We decided not to stain this countertop, we just left the concrete as is, and it came out with a beautiful color and finish.

So there is my big reveal! Hope you enjoyed it. Keep checking in, there is a lot of adding and tweeking to be done!

I love this! I have similar tile on my cabinets and this would be perfect! Thanks for sharing. Could you let me know how they have held up. My husbands concerns, other than me finding another project for him, is if there’s a problem with it cracking ff easily. Thanks, and again bravo!
It looks like the backsplash was tiled over and the exsisting tile wasn’t ripped out first. Is there a link that shows how you did that?
Can you at least post the name of the blogger? Or maybe an old link ? The title of their blog?
I really would love some more info.
Gator
The link is included at the top of the post, but they are no longer blogging.
Just curious do u think you can do an acid stain on the concrete? My laminate countertop has a curved back splash, do u think it is still possible to used your method with self level concrete? BTW, I love your backsplash! Is it slate?
I love this idea for my laundry room. I have the most awful looking counter tops in there and this would be very cost effective to change it. I wish it was a little more detailed in mixing the concrete and the form you used but love the pictures. Thanks so much!
Hi Jennifer! You could also try one of these two methods for concrete countertops — they use a different product that seems really great to work with!

we just did something similar over our laminate counters! Was an experiment too, but turned out awesome! Looks great!

Hey Amber! Do you have a link I could check yours out? I’d love to see and I’m not finding it on your site. Thanks!
Finishing up the post today. Will leave a link when it’s up!
Sounds great! You can link up at our link party, too, pretty please 🙂 https://www.remodelaholic.com/2015/03/budgetfriendly-diys-march-link-party/ Excited to see it!
Love how your countertops turned out!! My husband and I did the very same thing. I just curious as to what sealer you used. We used Chung’s but we had to do a zillion coats and then waxed it but I feel ours aren’t and shiny and beautiful as your.
Wonderful! I’m moving into my first fixer upper home next month. It needs a ton of work and I need to save every penny. I’ll give this a shot.
These countertops are beautiful and exactly what I want!
Can you tell me if you left a gap in the form around the edges of the countertop?
Also, how are they holding up at this point?
Thanks so much!
Hannah
Do you think it would work over laminate. They look really nice.
Hello. I tried to click on every link to find the answers but honestly I never found ‘the link’ you described. Not very specific as to what link is, named or???
I thought it was fantastic and it’s a shame not to be able to get real details.
Hi Teressa,
Unfortunately, this post is a few years old and the person who originally shared the idea (Cassie of Design Stocker) isn’t blogging anymore. That’s the link at the top of the post, back to her blog, but there aren’t a whole lot more details there. We have been working on getting in touch with her to get some more details, but no luck yet! Sorry we can’t be more help!
Hi! I have very similar countertops in the new home we are moving into. My one question is how did he do the edges? Did he leave room in the form for the concrete to go down the sides or did you slather that on by hand? Thank you so much for the inspiration and the hope of having a non-1980s looking kitchen!
Hi Kacey,
We didn’t do this project, just featured it a few years ago. We’ve tried contacting the original creator for more details, but we haven’t been able to get in touch with her, unfortunately. From what I would guess, and what I’ve seen of similar projects: yes, you’d want to leave room in the form for the concrete to go down the sides of the countertops, so it’s all solid. Sorry I can’t be more helpful! We will keep trying to get more info!
We also have other DIY concrete countertops here you can check out for different styles/install methods:

Hopefully this is a little helpful, at least, and good luck! We’d love to see pictures of what you end up doing!
Omg I’m loving it. Just did it to my bathroom vanity n I’m waiting for it to cure will sand it tomorrow. Was having a bit difficulty with the sides but managed to do it by using thicker consustency cement n just slapping it on. Hopefully once it’s sanded down with b smooth like yours.
And about ur floor? Paint it woman!!!! Do a stencil with grey colour on a white background . It will look gooooood….
How did you finish the edge of the counter where the tile was exposed after removing the mold?
Hi Lanie,
This is a guest post from several years ago and we’ve been trying to contact the original author to get some additional info, to no avail 🙁 We’ll keep trying, but sorry we’re not more help currently.
Love your counter tops, just wondering how much did you spend on this project?
People! This is an old post! Leave this poor woman, Cass, alone! 🙂
How did the self leveling concrete hold up now that it’s 2017 just wondering before I pour mine on my counters and how thick was the top? from the photo it looks about like 1 inch.
How about sink section was it removed before pouring concrete?????????
How did you make the forms around the edges?
LOVE IT! SO CLEVER!
