Décor Detox: Banish These 17 Outdated Home Trends!

As the years roll by, home design trends come and go like the seasons. What was once fashionable and cutting-edge can quickly become outdated and tacky. If your home is still stuck in a time warp, fear not – it’s never too late for a refresh.

In this blog, we’ll explore 17 outdated home trends that you should consider banishing.

17. Tuscan-Inspired Decor

The Tuscan-inspired trend with heavy textures, dark woods, and earthy tones has had its time. Shift towards a lighter, airier palette and simpler textures for a more current and timeless home decor style.

16. Overstuffed Furniture

We know its comfortable but overstuffed furniture is often out of proportion and looks squished or floppy- never polished and planned.  Opt for properly sized and proportioned furnishings, it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable, but will look so much better in your space.

15. Shag Carpets

Let go of the groovy, high-pile shag carpets and embrace hardwood floors, laminate, or modern low-pile carpets for a cleaner and more contemporary look.  While a shag rug is still very chic as an area rug, wall to wall thick shag carpeting, is not.

14. Popcorn Ceilings

Say goodbye to those old-school popcorn ceilings and say hello to sleek and smooth surfaces. Just strip off that bumpy texture and put on a fresh layer of paint. Your room will have a modern look in no time.

Word of warning, depending on the age of your house, some popcorn ceilings can contain asbestos, so be sure to test before removing if your home was built before 1978.

13. Overly Ornate Furniture

Don’t let fancy and overly elaborate furniture cramp your style. Keep it simple and fly with clean, streamlined pieces that bring a chill and breezy feel to your space. No clutter, just pure freshness.

12. Avocado Green Appliances

That old-school avocado green, mustard etc stuff was way back in the ’70s, but it’s a no-go in today’s fresh and sleek kitchen trends. Level up with stainless steel or neutral-colored appliances for a timeless and classy touch.

11. Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds? No way; they’re ancient history. Opt for window treatments like simple modern curtains that bring privacy without dating your home.

10. Brass Fixtures

Gaudy shiny brass fixtures can give a place an “old-school” look. Replace them with brushed nickel or matte black fixtures for a sleek and classy upgrade.

9. Wallpaper Borders

Wallpaper borders can give a room a dated and busy feel. Go for a fresh paint job or pick a modern wallpaper pattern to bring it up to speed with style.

8. Floral Prints

When it comes to furniture and wallpaper, steer clear of big floral prints that are out of fashion. Stick to solid colors or low-key patterns for a look that’s lustrous and classy.

If your kitchen or bathroom is made of laminate or tile countertops with tired designs and shades, revamp them! Take them out and go for stone or quartz countertops to bring in that fancy and timeless touch.

6. Oak Cabinets

Oak cabinets used to be the bee’s knees, but they can weigh down your kitchen or bathroom. Consider applying lighter paint to white or neutral-toned cabinets to give your place a relaxed and updated feel.

5. Sponge-Painted Walls

The funky sponge-painted walls from the ’90s are out. Go for a solid color or a classy faux finish to give your space an elegant and modern trend.

4. Sunflower Themes

Rocking a sunflower vibe all over your home, from kitchen knick-knacks to wallpaper, can give off majorly outdated and cheesy looks. Rather, a timeless, neutral decor will level up your home with a sleek and sophisticated touch.

3. Plastic Furniture Covers

Those plastic furniture covers aren’t for you anymore. They not only look tacky, but they also rob you of the full experience of your furniture. Toss those plastic wraps and embrace comfy and stylish, turning your space into a chill and modern oasis.

2. Pastel Bathrooms

Imagine strolling into a bathroom straight out of a candy-colored dream, with shades like baby pink or mint green. Sounds cute, right? But sometimes, those colors can make a space feel old-fashioned. So, think about giving your bathroom a makeover with colors that go with everything or some snazzy new tiles for a fresh and always-in-style vibe.

1. Cluttered Gallery Walls

Now, picture this: a wall covered in all your favorite artwork, like a cool gallery. It can totally add some sparkle to a room! But hold up, if you go overboard and fill every inch with art, it might look chaotic and not so classy. Instead, choose a few big pieces or arrange your gallery in a sleek and smooth way for a modern look.
