How to Create a Relaxing Backyard

Add a Pool or Spa

Favorite Way to Cool off: Nothing says relaxing like a soak in a hot tub or a dip the pool. If you don’t have an in-ground pool, consider an inflatable one like ours. We even show you how to set it up in the video above or read about it here.

Create a space to Relax

A place to relax includes a nice spot to sit and a place to keep your drink ;).

Favorite Place to Lounge: We built this amazing couch and it is so comfy! Lay down in the sun or shade with a good book after you build this plywood sectional sofa.

Favorite Patio Table: We love the great look of this waterfall table and the versatility. Add an insert for drinks or a plant. Either way it is a great companion to a comfy seat.

Build a Pergola

A backyard usually needs shade and light, a pergola is a great start to creating a relaxing background.

Add Ambience

One of the biggest factors affecting how relaxing a outdoor space (or really any space) is ambience. Lighting and other small things can add to or take away from how relaxing your yard becomes.

Favorite Simple Way to Add Ambience: String lights are one of the easiest ways to add ambience to your backyard. Simply put them up and instantly add a little bit of light to your summer nights. We are sharing our favorite ideas for backyard lighting here.

Add a Water Feature

The sound of running water can be quite relaxing. Just think of walking out your back door and hearing that soothing sound while sipping a drink on your patio. Ahh, sign me up.

Favorite Budget Waterfall: This waterfall and pond by The Summery Umbrella for Remodelaholic turned out amazing and was completed on a budget! See you can have a gorgeous water feature too!

Favorite Rustic Waterfall: Salvage Sister and Mister created a waterfall that fit their style with an old pick up truck. So creative! Think outside the box to really create a feature you love.

Favorite Water Feature and Table: If you don’t have a ton of space in your yard, this might be a great way to still incorporate a water feature.

Now for our last laugh! Do you like to stay in or go out? I’m a mix of both, but I can totally relate to this sometimes!

  1. Thanks for sharing all these lovely things! I really like the hummingbird feeder
and the link does not work. I’d like to get it and have you receive some sort of credit for my purchase. Can you provide another link?

  2. Any ideas on what to do with this? I want to add some privacy, a veggie/fruit garden, a BBQ area, & maybe a place to put an inflatable pool. My hubby has OCD, so I’m making a plan & trying to figure it out before I start. I have a pretty tight budget.

  3. Love these ideas! I want to get a pond and waterfall installed in my backyard this summer- they add such a whimsical touch to this space. I agree with your point about adding privacy to your backyard! About a year ago, I got composite fence panels installed by a local contractor. This has made my backyard so much more relaxing because it keeps noisy neighbors and animals away!
